Killers of the Flower Moon
by David Grann

Chilling! Normally nonfiction isn’t my thing, but this story was shocking. The research done by Grann must have given the families of the murdered Osage some degree of comfort after the law did nothing to protect them and precious little to punish the murderers. The end of this book is incredible; after you think you’ve heard the truth behind the awful acts, Grann hits you with a storm of additional details that would be unbelievable in a fictional book. Mind: blown!

Bad Blood

I love Virgil Flowers! Sandford’s hero in this series is smart and very witty, making these books a blast to read or listen to. I prefer the printed version but had too much going on this weekend and let Eric Conger read to me instead. He’s excellent, too. The storyline of this title was a bit tough to stomach, and there were so many names it got a little bit confusing as I ran around cooking and cleaning, hence 4 ?? rather than 5. But I anticipate #5 in the Flowers series almost as much as the next Will Trent, and Sandford has written many more books than Slaughter, so this list is thankfully still long.

My Lovely Wife

Weird. And not in a good way. Disturbing, but thankfully not graphically violent. On a positive note, this one was unique, so it gets a couple of stars for that. Feeling a bit queasy upon finishing it, though, and not looking for another Downing read for the foreseeable future.

It’s Virgil Flowers, so it’s always gonna be a good time. Why do these books make me want to watch a show about Muskie fishing, when I don’t really know what a Muskie is? One of life’s mysteries. And one of the attractive things about this series is that it makes small towns in Minnesota at least a bit interesting. Five books in, and they still don’t bore me, so on to #6.

The Coffin Dancer
by Jeffery Deaver

It’s rare that a twist catches me completely off guard, but Deaver utterly shocked me here. Nearing the end of Dancer around 1 am, I was mad, saying, “That makes no sense because…” But it finally did. Sneaky bugger! There are multiple twists here, sometimes twisting back on themselves, and this one was essential to read in print rather than listening to audio while doing other things. Glad I didn’t attempt that. Surprising as it was, and filled with minute details and intricacies of different avenues of information, Dancer wasn’t quite as appealing as its predecessor, The Bone Collector, but it’s exciting to know there are many more titles in this Lincoln Rhyme series. (With the bonus that he still looks a lot like Denzel Washington in my mind, despite Deaver’s written descriptions to the contrary.) This high-flying book lived up to its “thriller” label like nothing I’ve read before,

A very good thriller. Couldn't put it down towards the end. It took a bit to get into it.
